Marcum Technology was presented with the opportunity to assist a private international university medical school that was interested in updating their data center and reducing its footprint. The university also wanted to create a disaster recover solution that would protect their campuses and offices in New York and the Caribbean. Marcum Technology was selected to architect, deploy and support a private cloud solution, (NetApp, Cisco, and VMware) that would as a result virtualize much of their current environment and replace aging technology.

A FlexPod is an integrated computing, networking, and storage solution developed by Cisco and NetApp. Its configurations and workloads are published as Cisco Validated Designs. FlexPod components include Cisco Unified Computing System (Cisco UCS) servers, Cisco Nexus switches, and NetApp unified storage systems. The FlexPod architecture can scale up or out, and it can be optimized for a variety of mixed workloads in both virtualized and non-virtualized environments.

Marcum was required to design and build an agile platform with high availability and scalable storage. Along with reducing operating costs, Marcum provided a converged infrastructure to support future hybrid cloud computing.

The scope of this service engagement consisted of the following:

  1. Install FAS8040HA with traditional as well as solid state drives for flash acceleration.
  2. Install a Cisco UCS chassis with multiple blades each with 2 x Xeon E5-2680v3 / 2.5 GHz - RAM 256 GB and a pair of 6248UP 48-Port Fabric Interconnect switches.
  3. Install VMware on these blades and configure NFS to allow these blades to access the NetApp.
  4. Migrate existing virtual machines to the new Cisco/NetApp design.

Thanks to Marcum, the University continues to provide a technologically advanced campus in an idyllic island location.
